Taylor’s Gould is MCC Coach of the Year; Other Locals Honored

The Mid-Central College Conference announced its 2010 baseball honors on Friday and the MCC’s regular season champion Taylor University had seven players named first team all-conference plus Kyle Gould was named MCC Coach of the Year.

Gould led the Trojans to their first ever outright MCC title with a 36-13 record and the number one seed in the upcoming conference tournament. The Taylor alum has compiled a career record of 182-123 during his six-year tenure with the Trojans.

Travis Carsten (Homestead) was voted the MCC’s best pitcher after posting a 9-1 record and a league-leading earned run average of 3.18. The sophomore surrendered just six walks during 29 innings of conference play to rank second in the league. His 38 total strikeouts was second among Trojan pitchers.

Joining Carsten on the first team was fellow sophomore Ryan Baker (Bellmont) who led the MCC with a 1.80 ERA and a 4-0 (6-1 overall) record during conference games.

Two of Taylor’s remaining first team slots went to a pair of sophomores (and Norwell alums), first baseman Ryne Otis and catcher Rhett Goodmiller. Otis, who led the Trojans with 11 home runs and 55 RBIs, received his second straight selection to the league’s first team. Goodmiller batted .417 and led the team with a .547 on-base percentage.

The Trojans’ seven first team all-conference selections was four more than second place Spring Arbor’s three selections.

Taylor’s Ryne Otis is MCC Player of the Week

Taylor baseball first baseman Ryne Otis (Ossian, Ind./Norwell) has been named the Mid-Central College Conference Player of the week. The MCC weekly award is the first for Otis this season, and the third of the sophomore’s career.

With at least one hit in each of Taylor’s five games, Otis hit .625 and slugged at 1.500 in 16 at-bats. His 11 RBI and nine runs scored accounted for 20 of Taylor’s 42 runs scored during the week. Otis hit home runs in three out of five games last week, including a blast that put Taylor up 4-1 against defending Big Ten champion Indiana in the top of the fifth inning on Saturday.

In a 9-6 victory over Indiana Wesleyan on Friday, Otis recorded an RBI in each of his four at-bats and was just a double shy of the cycle. He drove in both game-winning runs and tallied six total RBI in a doubleheader sweep of Grace (Ind.) during the Trojans’ conference opener on Tuesday.

The first baseman’s glove has also been sharp, as Otis was errorless in 42 chances last week. One of the major driving forces behind Taylor’s 18-4 start and current 13-game win streak against NAIA opponents, Otis leads the Mid-Central College Conference with 25 RBIs.

Taylor’s Ryne Otis Earns Second MCC Honor

Taylor University’s Ryne Otis has been named the Mid-Central College Conference Baseball Player of the Weekfor the second consecutive week..

Otis’ was awarded the honor after extending his hitting streak to 14 games when he recorded hits in all six of Taylor’s games a week ago. The Ossian native recorded two hits in five out of six games to give him 15 multi-hit games on the season.

For the week, Otis hit .647 with a .941 slugging percentage. He had two doubles, a home run, scored seven runs and drove in ten as the Trojans completed a 4-2 week against Huntington University and Goshen College.

Taylor’s starting first baseman had no errors in 37 chances last week. In 242 total chances this season, Otis has committed just two errors for a .992 fielding percentage.

With 40 RBIs in 34 games this season, the freshman is currently ranked second in the MCC. He’s batting .429 to go with a .622 slugging percentage.

Ryne Otis is MCC Player of the Week

Taylor University baseball freshman Ryne Otis has been named the Mid-Central College Conference Player of the Week, as announced Monday afternoon by the MCC office. The award is the first in Otis’ young career.

Otis hit .600 in six games last week, including four multi-hit games to bring his season total to 10 games with at least two hits.  He accounted for 18 of Taylor’s runs in a 5-1 week for the Trojans by crossing the plate 9 times and driving in another 9 runs.

From Ossian, Indiana, where he played his high school baseball at Norwell High School, Otis is currently riding an 8-game hitting streak, including a .548 batting average in his last ten games. After batting just .161 in his first ten collegiate games, Otis is now third on Taylor’s team with a .351 batting average.

Otis and the Trojans (19-9, 5-1 MCC) will be back in action when they host Huntington University (16-11, 9-3) on Wednesday for a doubleheader.  First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
