Tigers Moves Bring in One Former Wizard, Oust Another
A couple days ago, the Detroit Tigers signed former Wizards pitcher, Jaun Rincon to a minor league contract. Today, the Tigers announced they have signed relievers Brandon Lyon and Scott Williamson in an obvious effort to shore up their bullpen. One might even become the closer when the season starts.
Unfortunately, the moves also pretty much means a Detroit end for another former Wizards pitcher. Eddie Bonine was designated for assignment to clear a roster spot.
Bonine made his Major League debut last season, coming up in the wake of Dontrelle Willis’s failure and subsequent demotion to the minors.
With the Wizards in 2004, Bonine went 2-1 with a 1.98 ERA over five games (all of them starts). He struck out 31 and walked three in 27 innings pitched. Bonine was originally drafted by San Diego in 2003 and the Tigers later got him as a Rule 5 Draft selection.

Bonine Has Shot at Number 5 Spot
Tigers rookie, Eddie Bonine debuted earlier this season and became the 65 former Wizards player to reach the MLB level. He is 2-1 with a 5.40 ERA in five starts. He produced wins against the Dodgers and Rockies, but hasn’t made it past the fourth inning in either of last two starts.Detroit optioned Bonine to Double-A Erie after Wednesday’s game, but the club insisted it wasn’t a response to Bonine’s recent bad streak. Rather, the goal is to keep the right handed pitcher on a regular schedule as he looks to be the regular number five starter afte rthe All-Star Break.
According to manager Jim Leyland, the club considers rookie Eddie Bonine the favorite to start for Detroit when his next turn in the rotation comes around July 21 at Kansas City [source: MLB.com].
Bonine Wins Debut; Becomes 65th Wizard to Reach MLB
As previously reported, Tigers rookie Eddie Bonine made his MLB debut today and became the 66th former Wizards player to reach the big show. It wasn’t the best showing, but when combined with the Tigers’ offenseive explosion, it was enough to earn his first MLB win too. Bonine gave up six runs over 5 and 1/3 innings before a capacity crowd of 42,348 at Comerica Park. The Tigers beat the Dodgers, 12-7 and extends Detroit’s win streak to a season-long five wins.
Bonine backed up his reputation as a strike-thrower. Of his 77 pitches, 53 went for strikes, and he didn’t walk a batter. No surprise, because he walked only 14 in 74 1/3 innings at Triple-A Toledo.
The 27-year-old right-hander, had won his first eight decisions for the Toledo Mud Hens this year and didn’t even have a guaranteed spot in Toledo’s rotation when minor league camp began (hat tip to Spot Starters). Today, he replaced Dontrelle Willis in the rotation and earned a big-league victory.
Congrats Eddie. I hope there are many more to come.
Bonine Set to Debut; Become 65th Wizard Big Leaguer
Tigers manager Jim Leyland indicates that there’s a 90 percent chance that former Fort Wayne Wizards Pitcher, Eddie Bonine will be Detroit’s starter on Saturday; pitching in place of the recently demoted Dontrelle Willis. Though it isn’t yet final, Leyland will likely choose between Bonine, who is slated to start that day for Triple-A Toldeo, and the just-arrived left-handed Casey Fossum.
If Bonine debuts, he will become the 65th Wizard in the team’s history to make an MLB debut and the third this season (Jared Wells and Luke Carlin are the other two). He’ll be the first former Wizards player to debut with the Detroit Tigers, making them the 13 team that a former Wizards player has debuted with.le with the Wizards in 2004, Bonine went 2-1 with a 1.98 ERA over five games (all of them starts). He struck out 31 and walked three in 27 innings pitched. Bonine was originally drafted by San Diego in 2003 and the Tigers got him as a Rule 5 Draft selection (anyone else thinking Joakim Soria right now?).
