I am Gerik Baxter’s sister, and to know that there are those of you that still think of him means more to me and my family than you will ever know. Every time a promising young life is cut short in the world of baseball, it brings back memories of that horrible night in July 2001. The pain and heartache is revisited every time I read a story about someone like Nick Adenhart or Mike Darr. I know Gerik would be honored to be remembered not only as a player, but also as a friend. I pray for peace for the families that must endure life without these amazing young men.

Thanks for sharing. I was watching the game where the Giants’ pitcher took that shot. Remember thinking to myself that “it’s a rough day to be a MLB pitcher” but didn’t make the Baxter connection – maybe b/c he was already on my mind. IDK.

I thought of Gerik the other day, I think of him most days because he was my friend. It took me back to the day he was injured in 2000. And that night the exact same injury happened to Giants pitcher Joe Martinez. Without that injury, I don’t know if we would have been as close. We discussed life and death after this injury. When I found out about his death, I knew what Gerik would have wanted me to do, because we had already discussed it. It was another life cut to short, but I was blessed to call him my friend.

It’s therapeutic to get all of this out, and I think it’s important that we share our feelings on this horrible accident. A young man’s life cut off in its prime, because someone selfishly decided to put himself behind the wheel when he was incapable of driving. Thanks for the well-written article.
