Rain Spoils Opportunity for Five Wizards
By Chad Gramling | June 16, 2008
The Chicago Cubs were supposed to play the San Diego Padres in the final Hall of Fame Game today in New York. It would have meant a taste of the big leagues for several Fort Wayne Wizards as they enjoy their Midwest League All-Star break.
However, the rains fell and so did their opportunity. The game was canceled after a delay of more than a half hour.
Despite tremendous support from fans and enthusiasts, this year’s game was to mark an end of a tradition that dated back to 1940, when the Cubs defeated the Boston Red Sox, 10-9. Scheduling problems during recent years have resulted in the decision to end of the annual series that paired two Major League clubs in the traditional birthplace of baseball.
