The Wizards Ready for Amazing Baseball in 2008

One of the highly touted Wizards on the 2008 roster is Drew Cumberland. LaMond Pope of The Fort Wayne Journal Gazette has a great piece on the new shortstop as he tries to overcome the harsh Indiana spring weather during his first workout at The Castle.

“When the fans see him, they are going to fall in love with the kid,” Wizards manager Doug Dascenzo said. “He’s an electric type of player. He runs very fast, he can maneuver the bat around a little bit. He has a little bit of power. He’s coming into a situation where he kind of knows what’s going on. He’s got a lot of good things going for him.”

Cumberland comes from a baseball family. His uncle, David Francia, spent nine years in the Philadelphia Phillies’ system and is currently a scout with the Padres. Cumberland’s brother, Shaun, is an outfielder in the Cincinnati Reds’ organization. Shaun Cumberland will begin the season in Chattanooga (Tenn.), the Reds’ Class AA affiliate.

JG also has a great slideshow that presents the latest installment of the Wiz’ Kids while the get acclimated to their new assignments.

Finally, it appears as though JG will have a Wizards blog this year. I tried the link to no success. I’ll keep you updated.
