Colt Morton Making His Case Known
One thing I like to do each year is pick one or two of the Wizards players who seem to stand out and watch them closely. It could be the prospect that everyone is talking about, it could be one who comes with an interesting story, or it could be one who simply has numbers that makes everyone else on the team look like little leaguers.
A few years ago, the player on my personal Wizards Watch list was Colt Morton. He intrigued me because he was in a third stint with the team – but was having a fabulous season. I don’t think he hit over .150 in the first two tries, but in 2005, he hit .261 with 10 home runs and 46 runs batted in over 222 at-bats. He was hardly spinning heads, but he was surely improving.
It’s been fun to watch him climb the ladder and I’m glad he’s still in the system. When he debuted with the Padres last September, I may have been one of the few folks who don’t know Colt who drew a sense of satisfaction – other than Colt himself of course.
While Colt has never been known as a power-hitter, he does have 70 in the minor leagues to his credit. It seems that his power is drawing attention from many observers. And even though he’s probably going to begin the year in the minors – and very well may spend the whole year there – it certainly would be nice to see him catch on with the big club for a bit longer.
