Hawkins to Yankees

By Chad Gramling | December 10, 2007

Former Fort Wayne Wizards pitcher, LaTroy Hawkins and the New York Yankees have reached a preliminary agreement on a $3.75 million, one-year contract; pending a successful physical. The 34-year-old (soon to be 35) right-hander went 2-5 with a 3.42 ERA last season while pitching for the Colorado Rockies for $3.25 million. He had five post-season appearances this year, where he allowed one run and one hit over five innings. Colorado then declined a $3.75 million option; choosing a $250,000 buyout instead.

LaTroy Hawkins as a Fort Wayne WizardHawkins spent the bulk of his 13-year career in the Minnesota Twins organization, appearing with the parent club from 1995 to 2003, when he signed with the Chicago Cubs. He has also played with the San Francisco Giants, Baltimore Orioles and Rockies.

As a Wizards standout in Fort Wayne, Hawkins put together what may be the best individual season performance in the team’s history. Hawkins still holds Wizards records in ERA (2.06), wins (15), complete games (4), shutouts (2), strikeouts in a season (179) and strikeouts in a game (15). Even more impressive is the fact that Hawkins accomplished these totals during the inaugural season of the Wizards organization and they still stand more than a decade later.
